Ghana, Malawi, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda
We aim to improve the teaching received by 5.000.000 children by 2025.
Challenge
Lack of learning and writing materials are at the root of the ‘learning crises’
Hundreds of millions of children are learning very little in school. In Sub-Saharan Africa, less than 7% of primary school leavers can read properly (UNESCO, 2019, World Bank, 2018). Education leads to opportunities for children, but this is not the case if they are not learning. Children who are already disadvantaged learn the least. Weak teaching practices, low-quality teacher training and a lack of learning and writing materials are at the root of this ‘learning crises’.
Method
Guiding the local book supply chain of Correctbooks
BlueTree has been involved in facilitating the printing and distribution of Correctbooks, in Uganda, Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia and Malawi. Correctbooks are erasable notebooks and can therefore be reused. BlueTree conducted a Book Supply Chain Assessment in each country, during which we interviewed and analysed all the stakeholders in the book supply chain of the 5 countries. During the technical assistance we proposed a printer in each country, that can print under the most economical and qualitative terms. BlueTree monitored and evaluated the quality of the books during printing and distribution. The Correctbooks have been produced by local printers in Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, and Malawi and distributed by local suppliers.
Results
We aim to improve the teaching received by 5.000.000 children by 2025
In 2021, despite difficult circumstances due to covid 2019, 400.000 Correctbooks were locally produced and delivered on time through a local book supply chain. Through the Teaching with Impact programme, we aim to improve the teaching received by 5.000.000 children by 2025.
